Publishing has Changed
The world of publishing has completely changed in the last few years.
Self-publishing, digital editions, crowdfunding and other initiatives have forever changed the way authors reach their audiences.
Google ‘Publish my Book’ and you’ll be utterly baffled by the huge choice of services out there (3.65 billion just a moment ago) . You’ll be promised the world, very often for very little financial outlay.
Some of these services are respectable and valid. Some are simply taking your file and printing a book from it.
Other are a little more duplicitous. They’ll start by saying they’ll publish your book for a few hundred pounds. But your book needs editing? Your book needs proofreading? A cover? An ISBN…? They’ll suck you in on a promise of an affordable publishing deal which will very soon become rather less affordable.
And they’ll promise global availability and distribution when all that actually means is that (if your book has an ISBN and printed copies are available) it can be ordered by a reader through a physical or online bookshop. Do not expect chains such as Waterstones or WH Smith to have copies of your book piled high if you’re self-publishing.
BUT
While the traditional publishing environment has been disrupted, one thing above all that will help to sell in this crowded and competitive marketplace is quality.
Readers demand that their books are as well-written, well-laid out, and well-edited as ever.
Whether it’s your novel, family history or poetry we can turn it into a book your friends and family will cherish – and a wider audience will appreciate.
We tell it as it is. We won’t make promises that we can’t keep – your book probably won’t top the bestseller lists and you won’t find it in every bookshop. What we will do is give our honest opinion about your book’s potential as well as offering a range of solutions as to how to get it into the hands of readers.
So if you’re thinking of self-publishing and want that all important support then give us a call.
Refreshing Words has been set up to offer some transparency in the otherwise murky waters of the self-publishing industry. We like to call it “guided self-publishing“.
